Dr. Michael R D James was born in South Africa, spent 16 years in Cape Town, traveled to England to be educated at Grammar School, Exeter University (Bed.) and Birmingham University (B.A and M.A in Philosophy). He then traveled to Sweden where he obtained his doctorate in Kantian Philosophy at Uppsala University. For 24 years he was lecturing at Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Läroverket (The alma mater of e.g. Olof Palme, the present King of Sweden, Peter and Marcus Wallenberg, Curt Nicolin and Carl Bennet) in the International Baccalaureate Program (IB Diploma Program).
