A short Explanation of shorting. Shorting was a practice that helped to collapse the world economy in 2008. As a consequence it was made illegal but Wall street investors lobbied to have the practice made legal again. The practice in essence consists of “betting” that a companies share will go DOWN. The result of this legalisation was that we have a gang of market manipulators with no qualifications whose activities are very loosely regulated by financial authorities and who, for example can “gamble” with the shares of cancer R and D pharmaceutical companies. These actors evade the scrutiny of the public and work in the shadows of an already shady market(insofar as ethical issues are concerned). Robots sell shares to each other in accordance with a formula that brings the share down. Some Brokers use the shares of their investors without their knowledge. It took several telephone calls to my bank to admit that they engage in the practice of shorting. Why the reluctance to come straight out and say what one is doing, I wonder?
